STUDENT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

My goal is to learn how to use my strengths as a leader for dynamic and successful group work.

Uh Oh! Vs. Ta-Da! Teams

Some of the characteristics of effective teams include: everyone is free to express ideas, criticism is frequent and relatively comfortable, everyone carries their own weight and the leader of the group shifts from time to time. This SLI provided the challenge of building a tower out of marshmallow, string, and raw pasta. Although my group was not successful, we adapted a healthy teamwork strategy and I learned the value of allowing every member of the group to play to their strengths.

Dealing with Difficult People

This virtual SLI focused on how to combat the different ways that members of a student organization can be impeding the organization's success. I learned it is important to think about why a member of a group is exhibiting the behavior they are and to treat each group member with respect to resolve negativity.

The Power of Women's Anger

This virtual SLI focused on the importance of a woman's anger and her having the freedom to express it. I learned that many women fear mockery in response to their anger, but suppressing anger leads to unproductive ruminating. An important lesson taken away was to stop using "minimizing language", meaning to not devalue my own emotions for the comfort of others.
